Sun Cycle Example

An important part of learning to use astrology as a tool of transformation is to recognize the planetary changes as the planet moves through the signs.  The moon provides the most opportunity to do this and information of the moon phases are available on many conventional calendars as well as being visible each night.  For those who’s charts are strongly ruled by the moon –especially those with Sun in Cancer or the Moon in Cancer, learning to recognize the impact of the movement of the moon through the zodiac can bring structure to the moodiness and emotional turbulence.  For these people tend to be more sensitive to cyclical changes (hence the term lunacy) and magical practices increase this sensitivity.  Study of the meaning and potential for each sign can turn the “lunacy” into rhythm.  This rhythm can then be used as a basis for unlimited potential.  Because the menstrual cycle is a lunar cycle, women are also predisposed to work with moon cycles.  Understanding the response to moon phases and moon signs can help with the alignment and corrections of problems in ovulation, premenstrual stress, and cramps.

When most people talk about what sign they are, they’re talking about their Sun sign.  Most of the time when we think of the qualities of an astrological sign, we think of it in terms of Sun signs, but the same  “color” or “flavor” is applied to any of the planetary energies.  The study of astrology is learning how each of these planets respond in their various signs (“flavors”), how they relate to each other in the various configurations.  Each planet goes through all 12 signs according to their own elliptic.  Since we have the best observation of Sun signs through the zodiac, we’ll use that as the demonstration of the cycle of transformation.  This technique is taken from Richard Idemon’s book Through the Looking GlassTo do this of each sign we specify what is is, what it was, and what it is yet to be…:

  •  I am an Aries.  I am who I am.  I am awake and ready to act.  I am no longer a Pisces adrift in the sea of universality, but I have yet to achieve the peacefulness of the Taurus.

  •  I am a Taurus.  I am calm with sensual pleasures that this world offers.  I am no longer the rash, inpatient Aries, but I am yet to attain the flexibility of Gemini.

  •  I am Gemini.  I am clever and enjoy social interactions of all sorts.  I am no longer the Taurus, content to be at home counting money, but I lack the emotional qualities of Cancer.

  •  I am a Cancer.  I am nuturing and giving and sharing.  I am no longer the gabby shallow Gemini, but have not achieved the personal expression of Leo.

  • I am Leo.  I am my own person, creative and glorifying myself in the rays of the Sun.  I am no longer the Cancer happy to be home baking cookies and wiping snotty noses, but I have not yet learned the humility of service of Virgo.

  •  I am Virgo.  I am a useful, skilled, person dedicated to improving those things around me.  I am no longer the boastful, self-indulgent Leo, but have yet to absorb the view of beauty of the Libra.

  •  I am Libra.  I embrace the ideals of balance, equality, and the beauty of perfection.  I am no longer a participant in the drudgery of Virgo but have not embraced the emotional intensity of Scorpio.

  •  I am Scorpio.  I dive into the deepness of all things –including myself, in my search for meaning.  I am no longer a Libra, content with the superficial fascade, but have not tasted the freedom of Sagittarius.

  •  I am Sagittarius.  The world is open to me, a wonderous place of new lands to be found, new experiences to be had.  I am no longer wallowing in the depths of emotion of Scorpio but lack the goals and direction of Capricorn.

  •  I am Capricorn.  I create the plans and goals then strive to accomplish them.  I am no longer the irresponsible Sagittarius but have yet to embrace the humanitarian ideals of Aquarius.

  • I am Aquarius.  I proclaim my individuality but recognize that I am part of the one being that is all people.  I am no longer the materially driven Capricorn but have yet to achieve the spiritual oneness of Pisces.

  •  I am Pisces.  I swim in oceans of unconsciousness.  I am no longer concerned with the ideologies that preoccupy Aquarius, but lack the direction of Aries.

So you can see there is a transformation as energies more from one sign to another.  There is also a bit of disparage as one looks back and envy as one looks forward – in the same way as 2nd graders look down on 1st graders but admire 3rd graders.  This can sometimes be observed in relationships between individuals where one individual has multiple planets just one sign ahead of the other person.  The person with the earlier signs looks toward the other with a sense of anticipation while the person with the later signs looks back as if to say “Are you still….?”

Secondary Progression offers an explanation of this observance.  In secondary progression, the progressed birth date is moved one day for every year of life.  For example, if a person is 25 years old, the progressed chart is calculated for the original birth date + 25 days.  Because the Sun states in each sign for only a month, by the 30th birthday all original members of the Sun Sign will have their progressed Sun sign in the next sign.  So all Scorpios eventually “lighten up” (become Sagittarians), all Sagittarians eventually grow up (become Capricorns), etc.  –to some degree.  The basic blueprint of the natal chart remains but progressions can “tint” it.  It is the progressions that add some of the different qualities of people born at different points within a sign –those born later in the sign have their progressed Sun in the next sign (or signs, depending on age) earlier than those born early in the sign.
