Astrology is an
important tool for the Gnostic. It has been
an integral part of esotericism throughout time and its terminology and symbology is
critical in the understanding most alchemical, magical, and scriptural studies. But, more importantly, astrology provides a personalized tool for understanding the self, the phases of transformation of the self and interactions with others. Simply put, it gives answers to the questions Who am I? and What is going on? Astrology is based on the belief there are cycles/patterns that govern the human universe. Since ancient days it had been recognized that these cycles follow the path of the planets (including the Sun and moon). The cycle or the zodiac, is composed of 12 signs. Each of the planetary energies rule different aspect of life and the psyche. Within Gnostic texts these are referred to at the 7 powers: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Most modern astrologers also use Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and even Chiron or other asteroids. [Papus argued that the esotericist should stick to the 7 ancient planets. Read more on this argument. It also should be noted that ideas presented here are presented from the conventional modern astrological viewpoint. There are various schools of Esoteric Astrology (ala Alice Bailey, Alan Oken, Uranian, etc) which teach that the meaning of the signs evolve and transform as the human personality embraces its true self. Most of this thinking is based on 20th century channeled or transmitted knowledge and is not part of the general astrological heritage. Thats not to say that its not valid, its just too much to address here.]
